"Japan hawks" include Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., who, during a congressional hearing in September, attacked the Yasukuni visits as "the most egregious example of Japan's historical amnesia." Lantos is likely to become chairman of the House International Relations Committee.
Lantos also strongly criticized the Japanese government for approving textbooks that he said, "deny the Rape of Nanking in China and imply that Japan was simply trying to protect other Asian countries from Western imperialism when it started the war in Asia."
Lantos and other Democrats may also make a new push for a resolution condemning Japan's wartime use of sex slaves, or "comfort women," and seek an official apology. The resolution has been repeatedly submitted over the past several years but has not passed.Japan times

Chinese vice president says 'unpleasant' ties with Japan over
(Kyodo) _ Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong told a group of Japanese visitors Wednesday he believes the "unpleasant phase" of ties with Japan is over and the question now was how the two countries will further their relations, one of the Japanese visitors said.
Zeng also told members of the Japan-China Friendship Association, led by renowned artist Ikuo Hirayama, that while China is considering a visit to Japan by a Chinese leader, it is yet to determine the specifics of any proposed trip.
